If you confer this article: Model History
You will see that beginning from model year 98 (WAUzzz8GzWK000001) there was a new steering column (Lenksäule) in production.
Model year 98 started in mid calendar year 97.
Did you check the part no. in advance before buying ?
As you have written earlier your ident# is wauzzz8gzvn005... which states that it is a model year 97, which should have the small toothing steering column, according to our records.
Is there an adapter jacket mounted on your column to accomodate a larger steering wheel ? This could be removed.
