After "resetting" the unit with obviously no effect, I am afraid, that you bought a broken controller.
Windows:
* As can be seen here in SLP67/6 the central power window switch E154 connects on B7+B8 to the roof controller J256.
* Then, depicted in SLP67/5 this signal is re-issued on A8+A1 if the sequence currently allows it (!)
* These feed the relais J289/J291 + J290/J292 as drawn here in SLP67/3
Handbrake:
There is something mucked-up in your controller, since it should not rigger any roof sequence (window, pump).
Are there any fault readings from the new/replaced controller ?
Nevertheless I believe this is broken.

The fault reading of the 'new' controller is:
1 Fault Found:
01106 - Power Window Opening Relay (J291)
28-10 - Short to B+ - Intermittent
With mucked up - do you mean inside the chip? PCB looks in perfect shape, as the other.

I've spent most of yesterday hunting down a new Controller/J256, which arrived this morning and..
IT WORKS!!!
Really fantastic to see the roof opening again! It was very squeeky though - any ideas on where and with what it's good to lubricate the roof? Just some WD40 on the hinges of the arms, or is that not a good idea? I have already bought some lithium grease for the latches on the Hood catch on top of the windscreen frame.
Anyway, I am sooo happy, this was the most frustrating repair job ever, and am delighted to finish just in time for an indian summer..
Tux, Lemmy, Grappa, Sirpomme, Sierrakiller and everyone here - thank you all so much for your truly amazing help!!! Needless to say I wouldn't have been able to do it without you guys. I love the idea that forums like these keep cars on the road and scrap yards empty.
My hints for anyone thinking of starting the same adventure:
-Breathe in
-Check your looms
-Check your hydraulic fluid
-Think Lemmy Was Right
-Dont give up
-Don't EVER leave your VAG reader plugged in while opening the hood..

Hi Ed,
WD40 on the hinges is ok for a quick fix. But the WD40 will disappear quite soon. Therefore I suggest to take something longer lasting for the future. I always use HHS2000, by Würth / Sebasto. Link: Würth HHS2000.
Although frequently lubrificating my roof hinges, I sometimes, eventually, experience some squeaking noise als well. I can not reproduce it and therefore have not been able yet to exactly track where it comes from. I think it is a built-in feature

Hey Leute,
ich habe bei dem Wagen meiner Mutter selbiges Problem mit dem 00 oder 11 aber nie wie es sein sollte 01 oder 10.
Nun frage ich mich, wo ich wohl so ein J256 Controller her bekomme, wo der sitzt und wie ich den tauschen kann.

Stellmotor ist neu, Kabelstränge links und rechts neu. Ich befürchte also, dass es auch der Controller ist.
